Grandfather Nathan Goldfoot abt 1906

This is my grandfather, Nathan Goldfoot. The only census I have for him is the 1910 census in Portland, Oregon. He was born in Russia, which probably meant Lithuania, since my grandmother said that she was a Litvak. They met in Council, Idaho and married there where their first son Charles was born. Afterwards they moved to Portland, Oregon. Nathan was killed in 1912 in a horse and wagon accident, so the history of his family was not passed down to his children. Oral history from his wife was that he went from "Russia" to England and from there to the USA. I have found Goldfoot in England, some of which then moved to Ireland and then South Africa.

David Goldfoot: Prime Minister of Rose Festival

My brother, David Goldfoot, was Prime Minister in the Junior Rose Festival of Portland, Oregon when he was in the 4th grade. His winning speech was the poem, "What Little Boys Are Made Of". In 2003 he returned to Portland from Madison, Wisconsin to be a knight of Rosaria and was knighted by the present day queen. Now he to be called "Sir David Goldfoot". A rose was also named for him. He was a beautiful child then and a handsome psychologist now.

Elsie Goldfoot With Niece Nadene Goldfoot 1934/35

This is my aunt, Elsie Goldfoot holding me in 1934/35. She married Al Eichman and my cousin Donald was born four years after this picture was taken. I remember Auntie Elsie taking me to the Jolly Joan restaurant one time and buying me a waffle covered with strawberries and whipping cream, their specialty. I thought it was so wonderful that she treated just me at this time.

Ann Goldfoot Wedding Photo

Ann Goldfoot married Werner Oster, an immigrant from Germany who escaped just before the doors were closed to Jews. He was a sausage maker, so their Uncle Max Turn had been a sponsor and got him a job with his nephew, Maurice. Werner later became a partner with Maurice at Lincoln Wholesale Meats. Ann had five daughters.

Charles Goldfoot and baby Nathan1934

Charles Goldfoot is the brother of Maurice Goldfoot. In the picture he is holding his son, Nathan, named for his father Nathan who passed away in 1912 in a horse and wagon accident in Portland. I was always excited when Uncle Charlie came to visit us. He was a wonderful tease and gave me lots of attention.

Maurice Goldfoot with Daughter Nadene

This is me with my father, Maurice Goldfoot in about 1936. When my father was young, he boxed professionally. He told me that if his opponent was quite large, he would take a fall rather than being beaten up badly. He started working in a kosher butcher shop and from there went to owning his own whole-sale meat store called Lincoln Wholesale Meats on SW 3rd and Lincoln, right across from the Lincoln Theater. I used to keep his books when I was 15 years old. By the time I was in college, he had bought Silver Falls Meat Packing Co on "Slaughter House Avenue" in North Portland, where Swift and Armour and other meat packing companies were located on the Columbia River. He was a hard worker who never took a vacation. Work and attending cattle auctions were his life.
